Meet Tailor Brands

Tailor Brands is an automated platform that uses AI to enable small businesses to launch and run their business, starting with a logo and branding, and includes all of their online presence such as domain, website, business mailbox, social media assets, and more. Over 26,000,000 companies currently use the service. The AI system learns from every customer, using their likes, dislikes, and adjustments to fine-tune what it offers similar customers. Tailor Brands has a strong DevOps culture with a 30-person engineering team focused on fast product development, with system updates happening multiple times a day.

The Challenge

Tailor Brands needed to maximize their engineering team's productivity by reducing time spent on infrastructure maintenance. With a relatively small technical team of 30 people and a DevOps culture requiring multiple daily deployments, they wanted to avoid wasting staff time on everyday maintenance tasks and focus on business and application development instead.

The Solution

DoiT helped Tailor Brands migrate most of their Amazon EC2 workloads to Spot Instances across multiple production environments. They also implemented monitoring tools including Amazon CloudWatch and CloudHealth to provide improved transparency into AWS spending, enabling informed cost optimization decisions without disrupting performance or product development.

Results

  • Achieved 35% cost reduction through strategic migration to Amazon EC2 Spot Instances
  • Enabled engineering team to focus on product innovation rather than infrastructure maintenance
  • Implemented real-time spending analysis tools for continuous cost optimization
  • Improved access to AWS support and guidance for technical issues

We work with DoiT because their expertise helps us use AWS services at a higher level. It's like turbocharging the benefits. The result is my engineers are focused on making the business better, not on the day-to-day of keeping it running. This is what people mean when they talk about working smarter.

Nadav Shatz, Chief Technology Officer

Strategic Migration to Spot Instances

DoiT helped Tailor Brands move most of their Amazon EC2 workloads to Spot Instances to improve efficiencies and reduce costs. This big project covered multiple production environments and achieved a smooth migration from more expensive on-demand instances. The project delivered a 35% cost reduction at deployment, with potential for even higher reductions as the system is fine-tuned. This strategic approach allowed Tailor Brands to maintain performance while significantly reducing infrastructure costs.

Enhanced Cost Visibility and Control

DoiT worked with the Tailor Brands finance team to implement monitoring tools including Amazon CloudWatch and CloudHealth for AWS. This provides improved transparency into AWS spending, enabling teams to identify excessive expenditures in specific areas rather than making general cost statements. The detailed insights allow for informed conversations about cost reduction without disrupting performance or product development, ensuring optimal use of different AWS instance types for maximum value.

Comprehensive AWS Architecture

Tailor Brands runs most of its systems on Amazon EKS to manage clusters, reducing the burden on their engineering team. They use Amazon ElastiCache to reduce database request demands, Amazon Athena on S3 for their data lake, Amazon Redshift for analytical work, and Amazon SageMaker for machine-learning programming. The company is evaluating AQUA for Amazon Redshift, which can speed up queries by up to 10 times, and exploring more managed services to reduce overhead.

Future Growth and Optimization

Tailor Brands is expanding machine learning capabilities to refine customer offerings and improve their one-stop-shop business services. Their systems constantly analyze user customization patterns to inform design and personalization engine improvements. The company plans to expand services for small businesses and improve existing offerings including website design, social media marketing, and printing services. With real-time spending analysis tools in place, they expect even greater returns on their AWS investment.
