Recurly cuts response times 15% on Google Cloud

DoiT guided Recurly's migration from on-prem to Google Kubernetes Engine, unlocking PCI-compliant scale and faster environment provisioning.

Cloud Intelligence™
Recurly

The Challenge

Recurly needed to migrate its core infrastructure away from on-premises hardware to the cloud. Payment processing services ran on-premises for security purposes, forcing teams to travel to server warehouses for manual fixes. The company's leadership wanted to eliminate on-premises infrastructure to free IT teams to innovate.

The Solution

Recurly chose Google Kubernetes Engine as the only PCI-compliant, fully managed Kubernetes solution available. The company deployed Google Cloud Platform with streamlined access to on-demand compute resources through GKE and Compute Engine. They also implemented Cloud IAM for access management, Cloud Pub/Sub for asynchronous processing, and Stackdriver for log management.

Results

  • 15% decrease in average response times to clients
  • Scaled cluster from 6 nodes to 36 nodes in just minutes instead of hours
  • Reduced environment setup time from months to one week
  • Eliminated dual user management framework and project delays

Having DoiT as a knowledge partner throughout the process was fantastic. DoiT helped us better understand our challenges and goals and provided effective best practices to keep us moving in the right direction.

Jeff Sheldon, VP of Platform and Architecture

Enhanced Productivity and Scaling

When Recurly deployed their production environment, they scaled their cluster from six nodes to 36 nodes in just a couple of minutes—a process that would have taken hours with their previous provider. Faster and more streamlined scaling allows the company to stand up new environments within one week rather than the months it used to take, translating to much faster time to market for services.

Improved Access Management and Security

Recurly took advantage of Cloud Identity and Access Management to eliminate access control challenges. With access to cloud resources being controlled through Cloud IAM, they can provide read access to developers all the way through their production environment, empowering the engineering team to focus on innovation rather than verification and routine tasks. The company also relies on Cloud Pub/Sub for asynchronous processing and Stackdriver for log management.

Partnership with DoiT

Recurly migrated its infrastructure with confidence by tapping into the engineer-to-engineer support offered by Managed Services Provider and Premier Google Cloud partner, DoiT. Given the migration's scope and complexity, Recurly benefited from DoiT's expertise in navigating all facets of the migration. DoiT offered 24/7 support that accelerated the Google Cloud migration while enabling the company to maximize savings and efficiencies.

Future Innovation

After its positive experiences with Google Cloud and DoiT, Recurly is looking to further enhance its infrastructure and employee experiences. Next up for the company is experimenting with data analytics, machine learning, and other Google Cloud solutions. The goal is to enable engineers to innovate through advanced access to cloud technologies that directly support their ideas.
