Climate X Cuts Cloud Costs 17% on AWS

A DoiT AWS Well-Architected Review rebuilt the architecture behind Spectra, improving scalability and resilience for commercial launch.

The Challenge

Before launching Spectra commercially, Climate X needed to modernize its AWS architecture to support data-intensive workloads and rapid customer growth. The existing demo architecture had limitations with CSV file processing and lacked the resilience and scalability needed for commercial operations.

The Solution

DoiT conducted an AWS Well-Architected Review and worked with Climate X to rebuild their architecture. The solution included moving from CSV files to more flexible formats, implementing separate modules for different data processing functions, migrating to Amazon Aurora, and replacing Amazon EBS with Amazon FSx for Lustre for better data storage.

Results

  • Reduced IT costs by 17% through optimized architecture and automated spending
  • Enabled commercial launch of Spectra platform across UK, Europe, US, Canada, and Asia-Pacific
  • Achieved improved scalability to handle projected demand for 18-24 months
  • Increased data resolution from 90x90 meters to 30x30 meters (9x more data per tile)
  • Gained ability to process more than 2 trillion data points using AWS ParallelCluster

The new architecture allowed us to take on customers because it had the resilience and availability and scale to meet commercial needs and to let us sign contracts.

Andrew Ellam, Vice President of Technology, Climate X

Preparing for Commercial Launch

Founded in 2020, Climate X provides an analytics platform called Spectra that helps organizations assess location-specific climate risks and financial impacts. The company knew it needed to re-architect on AWS before launching its commercial offering, as the first version was only a demo. AWS referred Climate X to DoiT, an AWS Partner with deep cloud architecture and FinOps expertise, to conduct an AWS Well-Architected review of their existing infrastructure.

Rebuilding for Improved Performance

DoiT's review identified several areas for improvement in Climate X's architecture. One major issue was the company's use of CSV files for processing data inputs and outputs, which limited file type choices and architectural options. The redesign involved building different services for different kinds of data processing, with separate modules for client authentication, customer request processing, load-balancing traffic, and reading geospatial data.

Database Migration and Scaling

Climate X moved from a single large database instance to Amazon Aurora, which provides built-in security, continuous backups, and serverless compute. This change provides a smoother scaling process for the company. DoiT also helped replace Amazon EBS with Amazon FSx for Lustre, providing fully-managed shared storage built on a high-performance file system.

Commercial Success and Expansion

By mid-2022, Climate X had an updated AWS architecture that supported the rollout of Spectra to paying customers. The company first introduced the platform in the UK before expanding to Europe, the US, Canada, and Asia-Pacific regions. The new architecture provided the resilience, availability, and scale needed to meet commercial requirements and sign customer contracts.

Enhanced Data Processing Capabilities

With improved scalability, Climate X increased the granularity of their geography-specific data. Coastal flooding data is now provided at 30x30 meter resolution compared to the previous 90x90 meter resolution, representing 9 times more data per tile. The research team now uses AWS ParallelCluster to deploy high-performance computing clusters, processing more than 2 trillion data points while paying only for needed compute.

Ongoing Partnership and Benefits

Climate X continues to work with DoiT and expects the current setup to handle projected demand for 18-24 months. DoiT has helped build a strong relationship with AWS, leading to additional benefits including an AWS climate grant. The partnership has provided significant business value through cost optimization and architectural improvements.
