Minute Media Lifts Video Capacity 90%

DoiT guided the build of an in-house AWS video platform using Lambda, MediaConvert, and S3 to serve over one billion monthly views.

Meet Minute Media

Minute Media was founded in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 2011 as an online toolset that allowed football fans to develop and share digital content. The startup expanded into other topics and is now a leading global media company, owning six different digital content brands powered by proprietary technology. The company developed an online video platform used by its own brands and more than 70 other video publishers, becoming the largest video publisher in the US with over one billion video views and 350 million unique users monthly.

The Challenge

Minute Media needed increased resources to support its massive scale as the largest video publisher in the US, serving over one billion video views and 350 million unique users monthly. The company required additional support to keep streams flowing for its licensees and six digital media properties.

The Solution

DoiT International guided Minute Media to develop an in-house video player platform on AWS. The solution used AWS Lambda for automatic scaling, AWS Elemental MediaConvert for video transcoding, and Amazon S3 for reliable storage of over 15 TBs of video content. They also built a semantic engine using Amazon Comprehend for intelligent content matching.

Results

  • Achieved 90% more capacity to upload new videos from partners and content providers
  • Delivered 70% more video views compared to previous platform
  • Saved $10,000-$12,000 per month on infrastructure costs
  • Built semantic engine with 85% accuracy vs 70% for competing products
  • Won more than 20 new partners with improved platform capabilities

DoiT advised us on which AWS services we needed to create a flexible infrastructure that allowed us to own the solution and meet our needs and the needs of our partners.

Building an In-House Video Platform

With DoiT International's guidance, Minute Media developed an online video player in-house on AWS. After six months of development, the new platform launched using AWS Lambda for massive automatic scaling, AWS Elemental MediaConvert for video transcoding, and Amazon S3 for reliable storage of over 15 TBs of video content. DoiT helped choose optimal technologies to create a capable and cost-effective solution that met both Minute Media's needs and their partners' requirements.

Creating a Smart Semantic Engine

Minute Media built a semantic engine to automatically discover and link related videos in real time. Using Amazon Comprehend's machine learning capabilities to identify patterns in video content, combined with their custom matching algorithm, the solution achieved 85% accuracy compared to 70% for competing products. AWS Lambda and Amazon S3 balanced loads at peak times to minimize video delivery lags, giving Minute Media a competitive advantage that helped win over 20 new partners.

Scaling Through Pandemic Challenges

The AWS pay-for-what-you-use model proved essential during the pandemic as demand shifted dramatically. While sports-focused partners saw video demand drop due to canceled events, user-generated content sites experienced increased traffic. The flexible infrastructure allowed Minute Media to manage costs as workloads shifted and continue onboarding new partners seeking cost efficiency in an uncertain economic environment.

This has let us get a better idea of what our cost of goods sold really is. It's not every day you come across something that delivers value as quickly as yours did for us. I was seeing useful insights inside the POC, and we had only deployed it to a couple of real clusters.
