A managed service provider (MSP) is a company that takes over the day-to-day operation of a business's IT systems (infrastructure, networks, applications, cloud environments, or some combination of all three) for a recurring fee, instead of a business staffing and running that operation internally. The defining trait isn't the specific services on the menu; it's the model: proactive, ongoing, and outcome-accountable, rather than a technician who shows up after something breaks.

That distinction matters more than it sounds. A traditional "break-fix" IT vendor gets paid when something goes wrong. An MSP gets paid whether anything goes wrong or not, which only works as a business model if the MSP is actively preventing problems, not waiting for them.

What Does a Managed Service Provider Actually Do?

MSP is a broad category, but most providers' work breaks down into the same recurring functions:

  • Monitoring and alerting. Continuous visibility into system performance, uptime, and security events, with alerts before small issues become outages.
  • Patch and configuration management. Keeping servers, endpoints, and software current without manual, per-device upkeep.
  • Security operations. Identity and access management, vulnerability scanning, and incident response, handled either directly or subcontracted to a dedicated MSSP.

  • Backup and disaster recovery. Automated backup policies and tested recovery procedures, so an outage doesn't become data loss.
  • Help desk and end-user support. First- and second-line support for employees, freeing internal IT from ticket queues.
  • DevOps and automation. Infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD support, and increasingly, agentic automation that resolves issues without a human ticket at all.

How Does the MSP Pricing Model Work?

MSPs typically price one of three ways:

Get a scoped quote directly from providers before comparing price alone. Cost depends heavily on environment size, the depth of 24/7 coverage required, and how much security or cost-optimization work is bundled in versus billed separately.

Break-fix is largely a legacy model at this point; the real decision for most growing companies is in-house versus managed, or, more commonly, some hybrid of the two: an internal platform team paired with an MSP for 24/7 operations and specialized workstreams like security or FinOps.

MSP vs. MSSP vs. CSP: What's the Difference?

These three acronyms get used almost interchangeably, but they cover different scopes:

  • MSP (Managed Service Provider): Broad, ongoing IT operations, including networks, systems, help desk, and often security and cost management layered in.
  • MSSP (Managed Security Service Provider): Security specifically, covering threat monitoring, firewall management, and incident response, usually backed by a 24/7 security operations center (SOC).
  • CSP (Cloud Service Provider): The infrastructure itself: compute, storage, and platform services (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud). A CSP hosts the environment; it doesn't operate it for you.

In practice, most MSPs resell or manage CSP capacity and bundle MSSP-style monitoring on top, so the lines blur. When evaluating a provider, ask directly which of these three functions they actually own versus subcontract.

Are All MSPs the Same? Generalist vs. Cloud-Specialized Providers

Not even close. Two broad categories matter most for a growing company choosing between them:

Generalist MSPs support a mix of on-prem, hybrid, and cloud environments across whatever mix of vendors a customer runs, often oriented around end-user support and network management for small and mid-size businesses.

Cloud-specialized MSPs focus on one or more hyperscalers (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud) and go deep on that provider's specific services, cost model, and compliance requirements rather than covering everything shallowly. If most of a company's infrastructure already sits on one cloud, a specialized provider validated on that specific stack is almost always the stronger fit over a generalist spreading attention across every environment type. How Do AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Each Validate Their MSPs?

"MSP" isn't a self-applied label with any of the three major hyperscalers. Each runs its own independent audit before a partner can claim the designation, though the mechanics differ:

It adds 24 net-new controls and updates 27 more, covering agentic AI platforms, Responsible AI governance, prompt injection prevention, and new operating roles like Forward Deployed Engineers, out of 61 controls total. VCL 7.1 stays valid only through the end of 2026; VCL 8.0 becomes the only accepted checklist on January 1, 2027.

How Big Is the Managed Services Market?

How Do You Choose a Managed Service Provider?

Before signing with any MSP, look for:

  1. Independent validation, not just self-reported expertise. On AWS, that means the AWS MSP Program Designation; on Azure, Azure Expert MSP; on Google Cloud, the Google Cloud MSP Initiative. All three require passing an audited checklist rather than a sales pitch.
  2. Clear scope boundaries. Confirm exactly which of the MSP/MSSP/CSP functions above the provider owns directly versus subcontracts.
  3. Transparent, scoped pricing. Get a quote based on your actual environment size and coverage depth, not a generic rate card.
  4. Hands-on engineering, not just dashboards. Ask whether the contract includes engineers who can actually implement fixes, such as Forward Deployed Engineers, versus alerting only.
  5. AI and cost-governance readiness. Given how fast AI workload management has become a baseline expectation (and, for AWS partners, an audited requirement under VCL 8.0), ask specifically how the provider handles AI cost attribution and governance today.
