Cafeyn commissioned DoiT to help assess the migration business case, review the migration plan and assess risks

Cafeyn is a leading European digital media streaming platform that seamlessly delivers a catalog of more than 2,500 publications across an innovative, multi-channel platform. It wanted a trusted partner to ensure that its migration to Amazon Web Services (AWS) would be cost-effective and secure and cause minimal downtime.

DoiT also assisted with reviewing the existing documentation and aligning the migration plan across all key stakeholders. In addition, DoiT helped the third-party provider responsible for database migration with the knowledge gaps.

The brief

During the initial consultancy, DoiT worked with various different parts of the business to understand how each of them needs to interact with the infrastructure and continue to deliver value to Cafeyn. There were some key considerations for DoiT when considering the best architecture, including:

  • High Availability infrastructure
  • Scalable infrastructure to cope with demand during busy periods
    • Ensure that there were little to no systems that are underutilized
    • Ensure that scheduling could be utilized that had no operational impact on Cafeyn
  • Reduce costs of running the cloud infrastructure
  • Align the migrated infrastructure with the existing customer guidelines and patterns

As Cafeyn is an internationally recognized brand, in a hugely competitive market, reputation management was a key point that all departments were keen to impart, DoiT needed to ensure that the proposed systems in place were:

  • Security
  • Reliability
  • Cost Optimization
  • Performance Efficiency

What we did

Cafeyn can now utilize and benefit from the latest advances in AWS for the continued development of their infrastructure, allowing them to remove the constraints present in the previous incarnation.

Once DoiT had completed the initial review phase, it was time to document and implement the action plan agreed with the customer. DoiT performed multiple architecture review sessions to ensure the stakeholders were aligned with the recommended changes that were also focused on gaining the best benefit in modern cloud-based architecture running on AWS. Since onboarding to DoiT and its subsequent cloud migration, Cafeyn has benefited from DoiT’s unique unlimited zero-cost support, consulting and training provision.

The result

Working with the customer on the current implementation and documentation, we were able to establish a number of areas where we could change the design and deployments to align with the following:

  • Provide best practices for backups and recovery
  • Provide best practices for tagging and cost management
  • Assist with planning the account structure and IAM to provide an appropriate Landing Zone design
  • Provide best practices for advanced monitoring and logging
  • Provide ongoing support in the operational elements of the migration to AWS
  • Reduce Cafeyn’s monthly cloud running costs by 15% immediately after the migration
  • Enable Cafeyn to use standard architecture patterns for the new applications and give them experience adapting acquired solutions to their framework
