LogiCommerce: Optimizing cloud infrastructure for the future of ecommerce
Meet LogiCommerce
LogiCommerce is a Headless eCommerce platform with over 25 years of experience helping businesses of all sizes create and manage online stores worldwide.
Designed for both B2B and B2C markets, LogiCommerce provides cutting-edge technology that seamlessly connects to the entire customer journey, guiding users to conversion while reducing abandoned cart rates.
Trusted by renowned brands, like VW, Carmina Shoemaker, Audi, Eurekakids, or MUNICH, among many more, LogiCommerce combines innovation, reliability, and exceptional support, helping businesses thrive in the ever-evolving world of digital commerce.
The Challenge
With its cloud-native, headless ecommerce platform, which decouples the frontend of online stores from the backend, LogiCommerce gives digital retailers a well-architected, API-first foundation and the confidence to iterate to build and customize their e-stores without sacrificing reliability.
As a company, LogiCommerce embodies this agility, keeping a lean engineering footprint as it focuses on delivering customer-obsessed outcomes for its customers. As the business has grown, however, LogiCommerce has found it doesn’t always have the time or resources to focus on its infrastructure. Running on Amazon Web Services (AWS), LogiCommerce needed support in making data-driven, well-governed decisions about its cloud strategy and unit economics.
In particular, LogiCommerce needed to migrate securely with near-zero downtime to a new version of MySQL and develop an effective RTO/RPO-aligned disaster recovery plan. The company also noticed unexpected egress and inter-Region traffic drivers and wanted to understand root causes and remediation paths.
“As we sought to optimize our operations, we recognized the value of expert guidance,” explains Xavier Leoz, CIO of LogiCommerce. “AWS recommended DoiT to help us implement these changes cost-effectively. We trusted DoiT’s ability to analyze these challenges in depth and deliver actionable insights efficiently.”
The Solution
Building reliable cloud infrastructure with DoiT’s expertise
When LogiCommerce began working with DoiT in 2023, its main priority was to migrate its MySQL database securely to the latest version, with zero-downtime and no impact on service SLOs. DoiT Cloud Reliability Engineers (CREs) worked with LogiCommerce to pre-mortem failure modes that could arise with the migration. As LogiCommerce was a heavy user of MySQL, storing a large amount of data, DoiT recommended blue-green deployments with automated cutover and rollback runbooks to minimize disruption and preserve SLOs. With DoiT’s support, LogiCommerce was able to continue offering its services without interruption throughout the migration.
LogiCommerce is now working with DoiT to develop its disaster recovery strategy, defining RTO/RPO targets, evaluating failover options, and balancing recovery objectives with cost.
“Partnering with DoiT allowed us to accelerate the development of our disaster recovery strategy” Xavier explains. “Their expertise complemented our efforts and saved us valuable time. DoiT has been supporting us from the very beginning and will continue until the day that it’s implemented. Without a clear idea of what to do, it’s a very big mountain to climb. DoiT makes it easy for us to find a way up.”
Making informed product decisions with the support of DoiT CREs
As well as technical support, DoiT CREs have provided LogiCommerce with advice and consultancy, guiding the company through its decision to start using Datadog to improve the logging and monitoring of its systems. “DoiT CREs provided a lot of consultations around how we might benefit from Datadog, and the best approach to implement it. They really helped us to make an informed decision” says Xavier.
Identifying and controlling spiking costs
LogiCommerce has also worked closely with DoiT to reconfigure its cloud usage, ensuring it is efficient, governed, and predictable. In particular, DoiT supported LogiCommerce in identifying why it was previously spending so much on its internet traffic and how it could reduce its expenses. DoiT CREs realized that LogiCommerce had a large amount of interregional traffic, which was running up costs.
“We didn’t know exactly why we had this traffic, what the benefits were, or how we could reduce the costs” Xavier recalls. “DoiT explained how AWS charges for traffic and recommended that we put all our critical services into two zones and all the other services in another. Doing this drastically reduced the amount of interregional traffic, along with our costs.”
DoiT also determined that another cause of LogiCommerce’s spiking traffic costs resulted from NAT Gateway egress between its private network and the internet. After analyzing LogiCommerce’s infrastructure and logs, DoiT advised it to reconfigure Elastic Load Balancing to distribute traffic more efficiently and reduce unnecessary NAT traversal.
Reducing overall cloud expenditure with ongoing consultations
LogiCommerce also regularly uses Cloud Analytics in DoiT Cloud Intelligence™ to manage its cloud costs, with a shared, real-time view, budget thresholds, and alerts across workloads and projects. Xavier’s team then analyzes and addresses the issue, turning to DoiT for support as necessary.
At the same time, DoiT remains abreast of LogiCommerce’s ongoing expenditure and provides biweekly catch-ups to review its cloud usage. “DoiT is constantly monitoring the cost of the platform and providing suggestions to increase its cost efficiency. It’s a very useful ongoing arrangement” says Xavier.
LogiCommerce has also implemented DoiT Flexsave for Compute. This solution uses machine learning to identify the company’s AWS EC2 compute instances that are not already benefiting from discounted rates, and automatically apply discounted rates to those workloads. As a result, LogiCommerce has been able to further reduce its cloud expenditure.
The Results
Saves the cost of one full-time engineer
With DoiT’s expertise and the support of its CREs, LogiCommerce has reclaimed engineering hours to accelerate roadmap delivery and invest in new products and services for its customers. “DoiT’s support enhances our ability to maximize the potential of our cloud infrastructure efficiently, providing value comparable to having an additional full-time engineer on our team” explains Xavier.
10% savings on traffic costs
With the support of DoiT CREs, LogiCommerce reduced inter-Region traffic by up to 40% and ELB traffic by 80%, driving a 10% reduction in traffic spend and more predictable unit economics.
5% savings with Flexsave for Compute
With Flexsave for Compute automatically applying discounted rates to eligible instances, DoiT helped LogiCommerce reduce compute spend by ~5% with commitment-free savings.
What's Next?
LogiCommerce is now working with DoiT to develop agentic, generative AI (GenAI) tools to improve its services and increase internal efficiency. For example, it is developing a chatbot to allow team members to respond more quickly to client queries, and a tool to enable natural-language queries to quickly access key company reporting data when needed. For Xavier, DoiT’s support will be crucial in developing these services. The company also intends to undertake DoiT’s cloud training sessions to learn more about genAI and how to use it. “We are not specialists in artificial intelligence” Xavier explains. “We would need a lot of time to learn how everything works, but that is the point of DoiT – we don’t need to invest the time. They do the analysis, give us the options, and then help us make decisions. It makes us far more agile.”
