DoiT’s Cloud Diagrams give Bloomerang real-time clarity at scale

Meet Bloomerang

Bloomerang is the complete fundraising, donor, and volunteer management platform that helps nonprofits deliver a better giving experience and create stable, thriving organizations. Combining robust, simple-to-use technology with people-powered support and training, Bloomerang’s unified Giving Platform empowers thousands of nonprofits across the US to raise exponentially more. As Bloomerang scaled its customer base and engineering team, managing its cloud infrastructure with confidence and cost control became increasingly difficult.

“As our platform and team scaled, so did the complexity of our cloud environments. We needed a clearer view to move faster and smarter.” Donnie Green, VP of Platform Engineering, Bloomerang

The Challenge

Bloomerang was struggling with a common problem in cloud-native organizations – tacit knowledge. Engineers documented systems manually, but infrastructure evolved too quickly for static diagrams to keep up. As a result, engineering teams relied on tribal knowledge and ad-hoc documentation to understand their environments. This slowed onboarding, created knowledge gaps, and made cloud cost management nearly impossible to centralize.

“We had diagrams, but they were always outdated. Every team had a slightly different understanding of the system, and that made onboarding slow and troubleshooting harder than it needed to be.” Donnie Green, VP of Platform Engineering, Bloomerang

This became particularly challenging as the company matured its DevOps practice and scaled into a true multicloud operation spanning both AWS and Google Cloud. Cross-team collaboration around infrastructure decisions between engineering, platform, and security was hindered by the absence of a consistent, live view of the cloud estate.

The Solution

Real-time cloud visibility with Cloud Diagrams

DoiT introduced Bloomerang to Cloud Diagrams, a recently-released capability in DoiT Cloud Intelligence™ that visualizes infrastructure and architecture across both AWS and Google Cloud in real time. Cloud Diagrams automatically detects and maps services, interdependencies, environments, and resource groupings, offering the Bloomerang team an interactive, up-to-date view of their entire multicloud estate.

Previously, Bloomerang’s understanding of its systems relied on a mix of static diagrams and institutional memory. This caused delays in onboarding new engineers and introduced risk during troubleshooting and planning. Cloud Diagrams eliminated that opacity. Teams can now visually trace services across cloud providers, identify dependencies at a glance, and align on architectural decisions with a shared frame of reference.

What began as a visibility tool quickly became essential to daily operations. Developers used it to understand deployment pipelines and sandbox environments. Platform engineers used it to monitor system interactions and identify inefficiencies. Leadership teams began leveraging the same tool to gain contextual clarity around resource spend and usage trends.
“Cloud Diagrams gave us the shared truth we were missing. Suddenly, we could spot inefficiencies, identify security risks, and explain architecture to non-technical stakeholders with confidence.” Donnie Green, VP of Platform Engineering, Bloomerang

Deep technical partnership beyond tooling

Bloomerang’s success with Cloud Diagrams wasn’t just about the technology. It was about how DoiT worked alongside Bloomerang’s teams to embed it strategically in their day-to-day operations. From the outset, DoiT’s cloud architects offered more than implementation support. They became a trusted technical extension of Bloomerang’s engineering function.
DoiT’s team ran working sessions to align Cloud Diagrams with Bloomerang’s CI/CD workflows, development environments, and naming conventions, while sharing best practices for integrating the tool into documentation, alerting, and incident response processes. This elevated Cloud Diagrams from a simple visualization tool to a strategic part of daily operations.

Looking ahead, Bloomerang plans to work with DoiT to use Cloud Diagrams for deeper architectural evaluations identifying potential gaps in infrastructure visibility, surfacing previously undocumented interdependencies, and spotting unused services that may have been overlooked during periods of rapid scaling. This proactive approach will make future architectural audits and cleanups more targeted, efficient, and impactful.

Cost optimization with Flexsave for Compute (AWS)

For Bloomerang’s AWS workloads, DoiT implemented Flexsave for Compute, a feature that automatically delivers cost savings across its compute instances without requiring reserved instances or savings plans. This was particularly beneficial for Bloomerang’s dynamic workloads, where traditional commitment models had created operational overhead and inefficiencies.

Flexsave for Compute allowed Bloomerang to maintain agility while reducing spend. The tool automatically detects eligible workloads and applies real-time discounts, ensuring that the platform team doesn’t have to manually track usage patterns or forecast commitments.
It also opened the door to more responsive scaling strategies. Bloomerang could grow or contract workloads based on need, confident that the financial impact would be continuously optimized behind the scenes. Flexsave integrated seamlessly with Bloomerang’s existing tooling and cloud infrastructure.

Supporting FinOps and governance

As Bloomerang’s cloud infrastructure matured, the need for robust financial governance grew. DoiT’s team worked closely with stakeholders across platform engineering to implement FinOps workflows tailored to the organization’s multi-cloud model.

With Cloud Diagrams offering visualized cost overlays and DoiT Cloud Intelligence™ features like custom budget alerts and usage analytics, teams could track spend in context, seeing not only how much was being used but where, why, and by whom.

This visibility helped Bloomerang move from reactive cost reporting to proactive financial management. Engineering teams were empowered to own their budgets.

DoiT also helped establish governance processes around Anomaly Detection, idle resource cleanup, and cross-team accountability, ensuring these efficiencies were sustainable and repeatable over time.

The Results

Cost savings that scale with the business

One of the most immediate and measurable outcomes of Bloomerang’s partnership with DoiT was a 16% reduction in infrastructure costs – a direct result of enhanced visibility, proactive optimization, and automation. By leveraging Cloud Diagrams to identify underutilized or misaligned resources and implementing Flexsave for Compute on AWS workloads, Bloomerang was able to control cloud spend without sacrificing performance or agility.
Importantly, these savings didn’t require additional operational lift. Because the optimization was powered by automated tooling and DoiT’s consultative guidance, Bloomerang’s engineers were able to focus on product delivery instead of manually managing cloud cost configurations.

Faster onboarding and stronger collaboration
With Cloud Diagrams serving as a real-time system of record, new engineers now onboard significantly faster. Rather than relying on outdated diagrams or piecemeal tacit knowledge, new hires gain a clear and accurate view of the full infrastructure on day one. This accelerates productivity and reduces the time it takes for engineers to contribute meaningfully to production systems.

Beyond onboarding, Cloud Diagrams improved collaboration across teams. Platform engineers, application developers and security specialists now operate from the same shared source of architectural truth. This has eliminated guesswork in cross-functional planning and enabled more productive discussions around infrastructure, investment, and risk.

Simplifying cloud complexity with a single trusted partner

For Bloomerang, the partnership with DoiT stood apart from any previous experience with cloud resellers or direct provider relationships. While other interactions often felt transactional or sales-driven, DoiT took a consultative, advocacy-first approach. “They’re one of the first groups I’ve worked with whose goal wasn’t just to sell more, but to actually help – through cost management, newer technologies, and real architectural guidance,” said Donnie Green.

As a multicloud organization operating across both AWS and Google Cloud, Bloomerang especially valued having a single, unified team through DoiT to streamline cross-platform collaboration.
Better FinOps discipline and strategic clarity

With DoiT’s support, Bloomerang matured its FinOps culture. Engineering teams now share a unified understanding of where cloud spend occurs, how it maps to business value, and what levers are available for optimization.

Cost overlays within Cloud Diagrams enable stakeholders to see exactly how resources map to projects and environments. Alerts and budgeting features within the DoiT console empower teams to take corrective action early, avoiding overspend without stifling innovation.
These governance improvements support Bloomerang’s strategic goals by making cloud costs more predictable and aligned with business growth. The team no longer has to trade visibility for velocity — they can have both.

A foundation for multicloud Agility

Perhaps most importantly, the combined use of Cloud Diagrams across both AWS and Google Cloud has set the foundation for long-term multi-cloud agility. Bloomerang is no longer constrained by siloed tooling or fragmented understanding. Instead, the company has a central view of its full estate, regardless of provider, that is always current and context-aware.
This multicloud clarity allows Bloomerang to make informed decisions about where to run workloads, how to allocate spend, and where to invest in future capabilities — all without increasing operational overhead.

“This isn’t just a visual tool. It’s an accelerator for decision-making and team growth. We now have the confidence to experiment, scale, and optimize because we can see the implications of our choices.” Donnie Green, VP of Platform Engineering, Bloomerang

What's Next?

Bloomerang is now building on the success of Cloud Diagrams by expanding its use of DoiT Cloud Intelligence for governance, forecasting, and long-term capacity planning. As the platform continues to scale across both AWS and Google Cloud, the team is working closely with DoiT to bring more automation and AI-powered insights into their workflows, ensuring its infrastructure remains agile, cost-effective, and aligned with business growth.

Looking ahead, Bloomerang sees DoiT not just as a technology partner but as a strategic enabler of its engineering culture and cloud maturity. The shared visibility and real-time architectural clarity delivered through this partnership will remain central as Bloomerang scales and evolves.
