L'obiettivo era sviluppare un backend proprio per il mobile gaming, in grado di consolidare e unificare i dati di gioco di tutte le piattaforme. Serviva un'infrastruttura scalabile e a bassa manutenzione, per potersi concentrare sullo sviluppo dei giochi anziché su backup, aggiunta di server durante i picchi di traffico e bilanciamento del carico.
Crazy Labs ha scelto Google App Engine e ha sviluppato il proprio backend in Go. App Engine ha reso lo sviluppo più rapido, con una curva di apprendimento quasi nulla. La piattaforma gestisce automaticamente il deploy del codice, instrada il traffico live verso le nuove versioni mantenendo attive le sessioni utente esistenti e raccoglie miliardi di log applicativi in BigQuery per l'analisi. I data analyst sfruttano BigQuery per analizzare il gameplay e suggerire miglioramenti tramite query SQL standard.

L'azienda immaginava un nuovo backend capace di raccogliere i dati degli utenti, analizzare i comportamenti di gioco, monitorare le performance e supportare classifiche e analytics in tempo reale. Serviva un'infrastruttura scalabile e a bassa manutenzione, per potersi concentrare sullo sviluppo dei giochi anziché su backup, aggiunta di nuovi server durante i picchi di traffico e bilanciamento del carico.
Scegliendo Google App Engine, Crazy Labs ha trovato una piattaforma che permetteva uno sviluppo più rapido, con una curva di apprendimento quasi inesistente. Il backend è stato sviluppato in Go, il linguaggio di programmazione concorrente di Google, raggiungendo la piena operatività in poche settimane. Go, come Python, Java e altri linguaggi, si integra perfettamente con Google Datastore, Google BigQuery e gli altri servizi Google. Per il deploy del codice, App Engine sostituisce le istanze obsolete e instrada il traffico live verso la nuova versione, mantenendo attive le sessioni degli utenti sulla versione precedente.
Quando Crazy Labs pubblica una nuova versione, la distribuisce al 5% degli utenti per verificare che tutto funzioni correttamente prima di estendere il rilascio all'intera user base. In questo modo, se qualcosa non va nella nuova versione, è possibile tornare a quella precedente in pochi secondi. App Engine raccoglie e archivia inoltre in modo automatico decine di miliardi di log applicativi, integrandoli in BigQuery, così che Crazy Labs possa analizzarli in caso di problemi.
I data analyst di Crazy Labs usano BigQuery per analizzare il gameplay e suggerire miglioramenti. Grazie al linguaggio SQL standard, Crazy Labs esegue query su questi terabyte di informazioni in pochi secondi, per comprendere meglio il gioco e, se necessario, intervenire con patch mirate.
Dopo aver testato App Engine su alcuni giochi, Crazy Labs estenderà il nuovo backend basato su App Engine a tutti i suoi 350 giochi. L'azienda sta inoltre valutando le Managed VMs, che offrirebbero un maggiore controllo in determinati scenari di scalabilità del carico e gestione dell'alta disponibilità. Nel complesso, Crazy Labs è oggi in grado di rilasciare nuove funzionalità backend 10 volte più velocemente, senza occuparsi della manutenzione dell'infrastruttura: un vantaggio che le permette di concentrarsi sullo sviluppo software e sul miglioramento dei giochi.
